Origin: Spirits of the Past (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Decide Now

Like some others have already said, i too was wanting this to be another "Anime Masterpiece" um not entirely while the concept is admirable along with the characters plight it just seemed to be missing something, what? I do not know, visually it is second to none. It seems to be akin to it's much earlier predecessor Nuasica (messed up the name) and the valley of the wind' however this one is far more Nature-Gaia centric in that it involves Elementals, monkish druids made out of trees etc.. so, it nice to see (for the first time) definitely not a bad anime, but could have branched out story-wise instead of the simplistic tale of duality .. "Black and White" "Us vs them" approach. this was OK, but was rushed, and became all too predictable not leaving any room for pondering what would happen next. However the animation is above average so giving this 4 stars is stretching it little. Very good but not the Myazaki film I thought it would be. I am not really sure if he was even involved in this, so I may be wrong for giving it that critique, either way it's worth looking at.Get more detail about Origin: Spirits of the Past (Special Edition) [Blu-ray].

Code Geass Leouch of the Rebellion: R2, Part 3 (Limited Edition) Right now

There is a reason why this series was named best Anime Series in 2008.
I mean it when I say that this series has something for everyone. Whatever your poison- from action to suspense to science fiction to yes, even romance- this show manages to weave all of these important thematic elements together into this fantastic story that during its entire 50+ episode run, manages to keep the viewer interested without laying any of its individual elements on too thickly. There are plenty twists and turns, plot devices, surprises and comedic moments that will keep its audience gripped until the very end.
And anyone who is a religious fan can tell you, anime is known for its lackluster endings.
Code Geass, however, manages to steer away from this stereotype, delivering a beautiful, finate closing to such a richly crafted and evenly distributed storyline that will most certainly keep you talking for weeks afterward.

Lowest Price Dragon Ball Z - The History of Trunks / Bardock: Father of Goku (Double Feature) [Blu-ray]

The 4 star rating comes from just the movies themselves - both are great. It seems like all Funimation did to transfer any of the DBZ movies to HD was increase the default brightness. When the explanation of how the Broly movie was transferred to HD came on, it compared the new footage to the original Japanese footage, and the original Footage looked better. In my opinion, the movies are just better off bought on DVD(at least so far - The Tree of Might may be different). If you want anime on blu-ray save it for Jin-Roh or Akira.Get more detail about Dragon Ball Z - The History of Trunks / Bardock: Father of Goku (Double Feature) [Blu-ray].
Low Price Astro Boy - The Complete Series

There are a number of people who wrote reviews for this collection who have rated it unfairly due to a couple of misunderstandings. These people have said that the DVD collection plays the episodes out of order. This is only true to a point. This set does play the episodes out of chronological order but it plays them in the order of air date for the U.S. market. When originally aired in the U.S. it was sometimes played on the W.B. and sometimes on Cartoon Network, this caused some confusion as to which episodes were played and when so it caused them to be played out of order. Not to mention all of the episodes which never even aired in the U.S.
Also this is the 2003-2004 series collection, not the eighties or the sixties collections. It is absolutely ridiculous to give this collection a bad rating simply because this isn't either of those two versions. If you bought this expecting it to be either one of the others it's your fault for not reading the product description. Don't blame the collection or Amazon for your mistake!
Additionally some people are complaining about name changes in this version! Really? What's wrong with the name Dr. O'Shay? Do you really want the eighties name of Dr. ELEPHANT, because I surely don't. Used to really bother me when I was a kid watching the eighties version, Dr. Elephant, please.
Now, besides that this is a wonderful program that ALL lovers of anime should get as quickly as possible! Does it veer away from some of the campy light-heartedness of the 60's show? Yes. Is it faithful to the original manga? Mostly, minus some camp. Does this version still have the meritorious social commentary of the original?? Definitely! Does it have an awesome updated techno soundtrack? Absolutely! Here is the listing of episodes as they appear in the box set and I have put the proper chronological episodes in parentheses for you.

Save Ninja Scroll: The Series - Ultimate Collection

When I purchased this item it was marked as a new product, but when I recieved it I realized it wasn't brand new. It looked like it was opened carefully then put back together. The sticker closing the tin was removed and it appears to have been like that for awhile because it was a little dirty where the sticker had been. Also the plastic wrap around the product was intact but opened at the bottom. Basically it looked like someone bought it, opened it very carefully so they could watch it and put it back together and then resell it. Everything works there aren't any scratches the dvd plays fine and I'm satisfied with my purchase. Discount The Ballad of Narayama

The Ballad of Narayama envisions a Hobbesian dystopia set in an impoverished village of feudal Japan. It's inhabitants don't simply live close to nature; they are a part of nature. In a lush valley landscape amid a lovely mountain backdrop, the villagers subsist much like animals, dependent on what little they can eke out of the land.
These farmers are filthy, malnourished, and vicious to one another. In the first half-hour of the film, we learn that they beat their kin, sell their children as chattel, throw their dead babies into fields as fertilizer and, when their elders reach the arbitrary age of 70, carry them to the mountains and leave them to die of starvation. This final pilgrimage is as much a sacrifice to the endemic hunger of the community as it is to the mountain gods, the gods who will supposedly reunite in the afterlife all those who perform the rituals they demand.
In this society, only eldest children have any value; younger ones are covered in rags and treated no better than slaves. Their teeth are rotting out of their heads. They form a despised underclass that is alternately neglected, abused, and raped. Life for them is, quite literally, nasty, brutish, and short.
Sex and death are ever-present, both in the human and the natural worlds; presented unblinkingly, these things are nothing to be surprised by, afraid of, embarrassed about, or sorry for. The peasants are impulsive and lusty, their songs bawdy and crude. They urinate and defecate openly. Mating, eating, excreting, dying: all are seen without shame as equally elemental and necessary functions.
Survival depends on dogged persistence in the face of adversity and on a ruthless willingness to discard anyone and anything, including sympathetic and filial emotions, that do not contribute to survival. Justice is swift and pitiless. A family that steals and hoards food is thrashed by a mob, their house is pillaged and, in short order, they are buried alive by a band of villagers. Not even children or pregnant women are afforded mercy.
While all of this sounds relentlessly miserable and depressing, the Ballad of Narayama is not without humor, since its characters are so human. They are petty and bumbling at one moment, proud and noble at another, and sometimes craven and courageous in the same breath. Much mirth arises from the stark contrast of these characteristics, and the extremes in the film make it impossible to forget that this is an over-the-top retelling of an ancient legend rather than a realistic or believable cultural portrait.
The central protagonists of the story are an irresistably wry old woman, Orin, who faces death despite her rude good health and indomitable vitality, and her son Tatsuhei, whose duty it is to abandon her to the wilderness. Yet Orin doesn't fear her imminent demise as much as she does the prospect that her son will not find a wife or that he will not have the nerve to carry out his obligations and thereby shame her before the other villagers, as his father did. She sets about arranging things with single-minded efficiency and a seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of joie de vivre.
The journey at the film's climax is predictably bleak, yet it has both a stark beauty and an unquestionable magnificence to it. The cinematography, as many reviewers have noted, is stunning throughout, as is the naturalistic acting of the cast. For an appreciation of a very Japanese esthetic, I highly recommend this cinematic masterpiece by Shohei Imamura, whose equally searing film Black Rain, about a family that survives the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, is also recommended.Get more detail about The Ballad of Narayama.

Cheapest Evangelion: 1.01 You Are (Not) Alone - Movie

This cut of the Eva series is awesome, but the DVD for 1.01 has production issues that make the overall image much darker than intended. Night scenes lack detail in particular. This was known in the Japanese release, and remains uncorrected in this North American release. I recommend getting 1.11. Not only is that one color corrected, but it has 2 minutes more footage explaining the complex narrative, and is offered in Blu-Ray. Skip the 1.01 release and just get 1.11. Otherwise, it's a great edit/retelling of the original series, with new characters and different events playing out. This is volume 1 of 4 pending releases, and represent a more mature director's master work. Old fans wont be disappointed, and new fans can ingest more of the main series in much less time.Get more detail about Evangelion: 1.01 You Are (Not) Alone - Movie.
Cheap Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Season 1, Part 2

Part two of "Code Geass" gets even more maliciously violent, with terrorist attacks, plot twists and a sadistic arch-nemesis.
This set of DVDs shows LeLouch having a tough time balancing his school life and the terrorist work with the Black Knights. In episodes 9-10, Zero and the Knights set up a massive landslide against the Brittanian forces in Narita. However, his landslide destroys the city of Narita, leaving him with the guilt of murdering thousands of people, including people related to his friends.
The true kicker of this box set, however, are the episodes in which LeLouch confronts the madman, Mao. This teenager, madly in love with the green-haired C.C., has an incredible Geass power. LeLouch and Mao are forced to confront each other in a deadly battle of wits.
Admittedly, this series will test the limits of even longtime shonen fans. There's plenty of violence and even a frightening scene involving a chainsaw and a pistol that may keep parents from purchasing this DVD. However, the stakes are raised in this anime for the heartbreaking, tragic end to season one in part three. This is a brutal, but exciting anime to watch.Get more detail about Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - Season 1, Part 2.
Buying Gundam Seed Destiny Anime Legends, Vol. 1

First, to all those five star raters... have you guys seen Gundam Seed? The first series? I mean really... because if you have then how can you justify giving this five stars?
Well now to my point: This is basically a sequel to Gundam Seed, but with nearly the exact storyline and plot threads. The same events that took place in Gundam Seed seem to be happening all over again. Athrun goes back to Zaft, he and Kira fight, dead characters from the first series show back up, the Archangel pisses of both Zaft and the Earth forces and gets in the middle of the conflict. Zaft even uses Genesis... AGAIN! And the Blue Cosmos has a new leader surprisingly similar to the last one.
Overall there are some good qualities and if the story wasn't what appears to be a first draft of the first series just reedited slightly then this would stand as a great series. The intro music is really the only music of quality. most of the music cut into the actual episodes pales in comparison to that in Seed. The writers even drive a wedge between what was one of the better romantic hook ups in Gundam history!
If you MUST watch this series, then PLEASE watch Gundam Seed first or this will completely ruin what is one of the most amazing series ever (referring to Gundam Seed here not Destiny). Please also watch with Japanese voice and English subtitles. But again... please please please watch Gundam Seed first!Get more detail about Gundam Seed Destiny Anime Legends, Vol. 1.
Buy Fate Stay Night (Viridian Collection)

It occurred to me after watching this that in good anime the writers create very human characters that engage us regardless of how bizarre the circumstances of the story. This series affected me almost as strongly as "Kanon", but the ending with its intertwining of love and loss, duty, honor, respect, nobility, and sacrifice left me with a feeling of almost unendurable poignancy, a powerful emotional confliction and tension that was almost as physical as it was emotional and unique in my experience. (Except in very rare instances I watch all anime in Japanese with subtitles because as anyone who's read any of my other anime reviews knows, I immensely appreciate the skill with which the voice actors/actresses bring their characters to life. Because of this I can't comment on the quality of the dub.)Get more detail about Fate Stay Night (Viridian Collection).

The Familiar of Zero: Complete Series One (Viridian Collection) Top Quality

I'd heard a lot about this show prior to buying, so I was counting down the days until Funimation released it on DVD.
The wait was worth it, because "Familiar of Zero" is one of the funniest, most entertaining shows I've seen in a long
while. The two main protagonists, Saito and Louise, have an interesting chemistry which makes for a strong plot foundation,
one that the writers and director build on with a fantastical setting and gut-busting side characters such as the
sultry Kirche and snobby trust-fund brat Guiche. Watching all of these characters interact is the highlight of the show.
Where it disappoints, however, are the action sequences. You never really feel drawn in or excited by the fights, such as
you would in a series like, say, "Bleach." They feel rushed, not visceral or heart-pumping. It's much more interesting
during the comedy/romance segments.
The animation (done by JC Staff) is great, and the music is generally good. The opening theme is catchy and infectious, if not
laced with idiotic lyrics that obviously signify that the song was made expressly FOR the show as opposed to a real song being
licensed for use WITH the show. However, the ending theme may very well make you rush for the "chapter skip" button on your
remote, because it filled me with a sensation somewhat akin to the feeling you get when somebody runs their nails down a
chalkboard(I think it's sung by the voice actress of Louise, but I' m not sure; either way, skip it, IT'S ANNOYING!!!)
At the end of the day, "Familiar of Zero" succeeds as a romance/comedy anime for guys, what with all the blatant fan service
and pervy jokes. That's not to say a girl or woman won't enjoy it, but just be knowledgeable about the target audience. Where
the show stumbles, though, are the action scenes, which could've been fleshed out a tad bit more. Don't let that mark down
dissuade you from buying the show, though, because you'd be missing out on one of the funniest and most zany anime of the year.

Metropolis This instant

Metropolis looks promising and exciting. I had the completely false notion before watching it that it was along the lines of Akira and Ghost in the Shell. It's considerably more cartoony than that, and yet it never seems to harbour any clear style, going from Astroboy cuteness to full-on anime. I don't think it's the masterpiece it has largely been hyped at, but it's far from a bad film either. It's definitely watchable and enjoyable, but it lacks a right-on identity. It tries to be a lot of things at once, and thus misses most of those marks.
The city is almost a character in itself; there are so many places we see in it, it's clear a lot of vision was behind this movie. The plot is a little too loose, though. It involves a cruel despot - Duke Red of the Marduks - seizing power in the midst of a rebellion by the oppressed lower class, who don't appreciate robots taking their jobs. Japanese detective Shunshaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi stumble into this plot and before long, Kenichi is on the run with a power-mad and robot-hating Marduk, Rock, out to get him and the girl robot Tima, whom Kenichi and his uncle save from a mad scientist's burning lab. There is a lot of dialogue and slow pan scenes that make everything more drawn-out than it really has to.
I can't decide what to make of this movie's vision. I can't tell what kind of artistic direction it was trying to take, cutesy or realistic. It often fuses the two, and not always to a pleasing result, sadly. The dialogue is often very stiff, too, and explains way too much to the audience than necessary. Three times in the film, we are told that robots can't leave their zones. Admittedly, a lot of the bad dialogue can be traced to the dubbing. The Japanese dialogue and the English dub quite differentiate on more than one occasion (this is evidenced by the English subtitles, even with the dub selected). Even if you're Russian, I would skip the Russian language track, as they didn't even bother to drown out the English dub before pasting it on top. Very sloppy work, as far as I'm concerned. But back to the film.
It has to be said that there are a lot of problems with the direction. The leader of the human rebellion talks about their poor living conditions. Then why not show it? A coup happens, and instead of an epic animated scene, we are shown a lot of old World War photos with a lot of special effects to give the impression of something happening. Instead of showing us what it really means to live in Metropolis, we're told everything. The viewer is a tourist, not an inhabitant of the film, which makes it feel very vague. The story's well thought-out, but the audience aren't drawn into it as well as they could have been. It doesn't make sense how the characters keep running into each other in this supposedly huge city, either, and it doesn't seem to terribly matter when characters are shot at. Another grave plot error is that the movie doesn't take a stand with or against robots, as to whether they're supposed to have personality or not. There is a 'tragic' death scene where a robot detective is shot, but because he has no personality, I can't tell if I'm supposed to feel sad or not.
Don't get me wrong, this movie has its good moments, but most of those occur in the last thirty minutes of the film, when Shunsaku Ban finally takes matters into his own hands, and stopping Duke Red becomes a matter of life and death... until Tima fulfils her "true destiny". The resolve is as vague as the character approach, but hey, it wasn't an astounding movie to begin with. Metropolis isn't astounding. It's a good film, but far from wonderful. An interesting cinematic experiment, it still needed its plot tightened up, because it all feels unnecessarily long. Most of all, though, it needed a clear artistic direction.Get more detail about Metropolis.
The Sky Crawlers [Blu-ray] Immediately

This movie is very much like "Jin-Roh", which was probably the best movie done my Mamoru Oshii. Meaning, some, SOME great action, but it's mostly a quiet and wonderful character piece. Definitely worth your time, but go in with your expectations appropriately locked down.
The only problem with the movie is that Oshii plays some of the clues WAY too obviously. It reminded me of Grant Morrison's "Mystery Play", where he felt so burned by his previous, breakthrough graphic novel "Arkham Asylum" because the fanboys were upset that the book was too obtuse and required them to puzzle out the story, that he made the second story much more obvious. "Look, my hand is bleeding." (Translation, pay attention, this, THIS is a important.) Oshii does some of the same things, and that's what slows the movie down a little for me. But, to each their own.
Lastly, some (insane) reviewers have read WAY too much of their own psychosis into the story, and have claimed the story is a FU by Oshii to anime fanboys. After seeing the movie, you can decide for yourself, and I'll admit, this analysis does have SOME merit. However, the bigger picture is that everyone's life is about breaking out of routine and trying to make your own path, finding your own identity. In short, those (insane) reviewers need to relax.Get more detail about The Sky Crawlers [Blu-ray].

Shuffle: The Complete Series Box Set Buy Now

A truly delightful romance comedy/drama series. Rin has the luck/misfortune of being the object of affection for a bevy of cute girls. It is definitely a cut above your standard harem type anime, with good voice acting and over all decent animation. Although it is not overly sexual, it does have some very brief topless nudity. So if you have younger children and would prefer them to see violence and brutality instead of a minimum of cartoon nudity then it's best if you don't let them watch this heart warming story of undying friendship and true love.Get more detail about Shuffle: The Complete Series Box Set.

Berserk Complete Decide Now

I started watching Berserk when I was 12 when I picked up the first volume at Blockbuster many years ago. Interested by the dark action and complex characters I continued renting them but the store only had 3 volumes. I found this gem and had to buy it, I'm entirely satisfied with my purchase.
Although most parents think anime titles are kid shows (like Naruto and such) be forewarned that Berserk is as violent as it gets. For gore hounds this is a plus. For 7 year olds? Not so much. The later episodes would give most small children (and some adults) nightmares. This however is a HIGHLY rated classic that no fan of the more mature series such as Ninja Scroll, Basilisk, and some of the infamous 90s OVAs, should miss.
It comes in a 6 disc set with bonuses like bloopers, concept art, and trailers.
I would recommend this to anybody that enjoys a good adventure though a darkly medieval setting.
Or violent anime with engrossing story.Get more detail about Berserk Complete.
Death Note 3: L, Change the World Right now

This is the third film in the Death Note series. It features the enigmatic genius L. This time L is embroiled in attempting to foil a terrorist plot involving a highly contagious virus. L has very little time before his own life is over because of his sentence in the death note from the previous film. (The death notes are supernatural books kept by the gods of the dead. The previous 2 films involved mortals receiving these books and writing the names of people they want to kill inside them. L wrote his own name to avoid becoming the latest victim of a serial killer- since he knew that if he died sometime in the future he wouldn't die at the hands of this killer).
I confess I didn't like this film half as much as the previous 2. Unlike the previous films, there are hardly any supernatural elements. And L isn't particularly an action character. There is a cameo briefly from Ryuk, (a death god), but that is it. L and the cast spend most of his time protecting 2 small children from the bad guys and foiling the plans of a crazed eco terrorist cell.
I was rather disappointed. The previous films were pretty good, but this one seemed weak. L is a good character though. So it was nice to see him in action, however I just don't think the plot or bad guys were strong enough or cerebral enough to be worthy of L or the 2 hours spent on it.Get more detail about Death Note 3: L, Change the World.

Lowest Price R.O.D. - Read Or Die

I have to admit when I first saw this OVA showing on Adultswim I thought it was rather interesting and decided to buy it considering I didn't get to see the whole thing.
Well the first time or two I watched it I really liked it and it was rather interesting. But the more I watched it over time the more I began to more or less hate it and it started to get on my nerves.
It seemed to have very subtle but childish antics evolved who were holding a grudge of some sort. Such as the President Peeing in his pants every scene he was in. Funny? Not really. Just kinda made me angry, and I am not the politic loving or nationalistic person. It just seemed rude and immature. Well there are other things like that through out the movie...
The second topic is it is very very jumpy. They are here, and then they are there. And who the heck knows how they even have these powers? They are not explained at all. >.> Hopefully the Series actually does try to come up with some explanation otherwise that would just be rather random.
Third of all, the whole reason of everything that was going on didn't seem that particular. From all I knew the guy just was depressed and felt like it. :/ Come on what are the motivations?Get more detail about R.O.D. - Read Or Die.
Low Price Kaze No Stigma, Vol. 2: Fire

This series had better come out with a SEASON 2---
If that doesn't say enough...
For a very unique style to this story, it's shows why GONZO DIGIMATION outdoes its competition both in the United States and Japan. Out of all that happens in the series, this volume unloads a very predictable situation and mixes it with something completely new. Very much based on Japanese Mythology, but there is a definite need for a more solid conclusion and a pursuit.Get more detail about Kaze No Stigma, Vol. 2: Fire.
Save One Piece: Season Two, Fourth Voyage

"ONE PIECE" is a popular anime series based on the popular manga series serialized in Shonen Jump by Eiichiro Oda. Suffice to say, "ONE PIECE" is the highest selling manga for Weekly Shonen Jump and its popularity has extended to various anime (via the TV series, OVA and films) and video games in America and also worldwide. The series is so popular, the episode count currently in Japan is over 400 episodes and despite receiving a heavily edited version in North America via 4Kids Entertainment earlier on, FUNimation Entertainment began releasing the original, uncut versions since the May of 2008 with a total of 13 episodes per volume.
"ONE PIECE" is an adventure anime about a 17-year-old boy named Monkey D. Luffy who gained enormous strength (and stretching abilities) after eating a magical demon fruit. He eventually teams up with a group of pirates and have the name "The Straw Hats". Luffy's driven to one day obtain the most sought out treasure known as "One Piece" and eventually become the King of the Pirates.
In "One Piece - Season Two: Fourth Voyage", the group finally arrives at the country of Alabasta, a desert that has its fair share of trouble. But the Straw Hat Pirates are determined to bring Vivi back home and help her take on Baroque Works which is led by Crocodile. With Crocodile planning to overthrow the Alabasta government, Luffy reunites with his older brother Ace who joins the gang during the trip through Alabasta. Vivi quickly learns that things have changed so much in her country that the villages affected by the drought are hurting and people are starving for food.
The "ONE PIECE - Season Two: Fourth Voyage" comes with episodes 92-103 on two DVD discs.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
For most television series, because they are created nearly before they are aired on television, unlike film and OVA's, there typically is not much detail involved in a Japanese animated television series. "ONE PIECE" is probably one of those rare exceptions in that it has really cool character designs and very detailed artistic backgrounds.
The anime series is presented in standard 4:3 definition but for a television series, "ONE PIECE" sports cool and unique character designs and beautifully painted artistic backgrounds. Definitely one of the better looking anime series that has remained consistent and has not downgraded since it first aired on television. Character designer Kazuya Hisada (who worked on the "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball GT" series) and Noboru Koizumi (who worked on "Giant Robo", "Dragon Ball GT" and "Tenchi Universe") have been very good of capturing "One Piece" creator Eiichiro Oda's unique style.
As for the audio, the series is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, English Stereo and Japanese Stereo. Of course, the English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound is the better audio choice to listen to, although one who has a receiver that can set their audio to all channels can definitely enjoy the Japanese stereo track as well. But both audio tracks are done very well and I have to admit that "ONE PIECE" has one of the most solid English dub tracks for an anime TV series. Very well done on both audio tracks but again, have been very impressed by the voice talent for the series thus far.
Subtitles are in English.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"ONE PIECE - Season Two: Fourth Voyage" comes with the following special features:
DISC 2:
* Audio Commentary for 103 - Spiders Cafe at 8 O' Clock! The Enemy Leaders Gather! - Featuring audio commentary with director Scott Sager and voice talents Barry Andell (Mr. 2), Leah Clark (Miss Doublefinger).
* Textless Songs - Textless Songs for the opening song "Believe" by folder5 and the closing song "Fish" by Kaleidoscope.
* Trailers - FUNimation Entertainment trailers
JUDGMENT CALL:
I absolutely love "ONE PIECE". The characters, the action, the involving and well-written storylines and of course, the wonderful voice work via Japanese and also the English dub tracks and the refreshing and unique artwork.
With the release of "One Piece - Season Two: Fourth Voyage", finally the group arrives in Alabasta and for those who watched the eighth "One Piece" film, this is the volume that kicks off the storyline with the full episodes and the traveling and dangers the gang faces around the desert.
Although not as battle intensive as the previous two volumes, this latest volume focuses more on Princess Vivi and what her country has endured but also we see a little of her past. Also, we are introduced to Luffy's brother Ace (who is one of the most popular anime characters in Japan according to a Shonen Jump poll) There are a good number of hijinks with these episodes as the group are in a hot desert and are lacking food/drink supplies but for the most part, what I found enjoyable are the number of Baroque Works top members being introduced and needless to say, you can tell that this is setting up for a major battle between them and the Straw Hat Pirates (which I am definitely looking forward to).
As for the DVD release, you get the uncut and unedited videos featuring "marathon play" (watching all episodes seamed together without the credits) and an audio commentary for one of the episodes plus clean opening and ending themes.
For "ONE PIECE" fans, this saga is definitely an entertaining saga and the Alabasta arc is definitely one of the more exciting storylines of the series, so although this volume doesn't have as many action sequences as the previous two voyages, the episodes are more character driven and we get to learn more about those characters, especially Vivi. Some viewers may find the filler episodes of the gang traversing into towns a bit too repetitive but the writers made these storylines a bit more intriguing and fun and not boring at all. But definitely, this volume is definitely setting the viewers up for a possible major battle with Baroque Works (which I definitely look forward to).
Overall, "ONE PIECE" continues to be a fantastic anime series that has a great combination of humor, action, artwork, great voice acting and cool animation. Highly recommended!Get more detail about One Piece: Season Two, Fourth Voyage.
Discount Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XIV (Mad Monster / Manhunt in Space / Soultaker / Final Justice)

What's in store for you in Vol. XIV? Read on...
Mad Monster
A 1942 wannabe werewolf film shot in very badly fading black and white. The Plot? Well, a mad scientist, whose work was laughed out of his former university, uses a serum developed from wolves to turn his gardener into a mad monster and get back at those who wronged him. Lots of fog, lots of bad makeup effects, and a lot of terrifically bad acting. This is a Season One episode before TV's Frank entered the picture, and includes a Commando Cody short. Joel Hosts.
Manhunt in Space
Made from three episodes of a TV show from the 1950s called "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger," this is a generic tale of space pirates...IN SPACE! And a cloaking device. And a lot of people in capes, for some reason. I dunno. Rocky's geeky sidekick bears the full brunt of Joel and the gang's heckling. Some pure genius here, and there's also a General Hospital short to start it all off.
Soul Taker
This episode from the final season finds Mike and crew dealing with a terrible life-after-death flick starring Joe Estevez as...the Soultaker. It's so 80s, its hard to watch as the displaced souls of our heroes run around a town trying to outwit the Soultaker, who never seems to move faster than a brisk walk. And it's written by one of the stars!
Final Justice
One of the my personal favorites, Joe Don Baker stars as a Texas sheriff who, by happenstance, finds himself chasing down a kingpin of crime in exotic . . . Malta? Another episode from the final season, Mike and the gang have a field day not only with Joe Don's corpulent character, but also with the dismal portrayal of the island of Malta itself.

Cheap Rurouni Kenshin - TV Series Volume Three

Jumping from the second season's brilliant Kyoto arc to the filler episodes of season 3 will likely seem a bit jarring to most viewers: near the end of the Kyoto arc you see Kenshin standing over the grave of someone from his past that he claims to have slain with his own sword, effectively setting up what was supposed to happen next; however, the third season completely ignores this and moves on to an increasingly inane group of stories.
The reason for this is that the next story arc in the manga was still being written at that point, so these filler episodes were created during the waiting process and became an entire season. Unfortunately, the Jinchuu (or Revenge) arc that was supposed to be season 3 never came to fruition as the episodes in this box set received such poor ratings that the show was pulled. This is especially sad considering numerous online testimonials point to the Jinchuu arc being the best of them all-- no small feat considering its predecessor.
...BUT...
This review is not supposed to be a lament of what could have been. As it stands, this is what we got with regards to the regular anime ending for Kenshin-- disregarding the OVAs that attempt to summarize the Jinchuu arc-- and this is what must be reviewed.
Considered completely out of context of the show, this set might be considered alright. In fact, I found some enjoyment out of quite a few of the episodes. For instance, despite being a bit plodding, the Christian rebellion storyline (the first of four major ones) is pretty enjoyable at the better moments. The two that follow aren't bad, but they aren't great either. To be honest, the only storyline in the group that I found to be utterly garbage was the last one, which involves Feng Shui-- also known as the Geomancer storyline. This group of episodes is so out of character for the entire series that it can hardly be watched without feeling a bit of disgust.
While I found a little enjoyment in it, should you come into this season expecting another Kyoto-like execution, you'll be severely disappointed. This stuff was never written by the original author of the manga and feels very much out of place at times, especially during the last two storylines. Furthermore, the ending leaves very much to be desired: it feels like a big letdown after the buildup over the entire series, which is all I'll say regarding it in this review.
So, basically, it comes down to this: if you are a completionist, go ahead and get this one (as you will anyway :p), but keep in mind that it nowhere near lives up to the rest of the series. Beyond that, if you are able to suspend your disbelief pretty well, you can possibly find some enjoyment from this season as I did. Otherwise, it's probably best to stay away and consider the anime complete at the end of the Kyoto arc.
If you want the complete story as it was supposed to happen, then read the manga-- I believe books 19-28. In lieu of that, you can watch the three Samurai X OVAs: Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection. The first two summarize the portion of the manga that deals with Kenshin's Battosai days, while the latter includes some of the Jinchuu arc as part of an overall flashback on the series from Kaoru's view. Note, however, that the OVAs are brief in their treatment of the final storyline, and they also trade the goofball tone of the series for a very serious and almost depressing atmosphere.Get more detail about Rurouni Kenshin - TV Series Volume Three.
Buying Castle in the Sky

I haven't seen anyone mention that they put the original score back into the English dubbed version. They had Jo Hisashi create a new score for the previous version (for what reason I can't comprehend? Imagine if someone did that for Star Wars?). It was one of the biggest crimes in the history of cinema as far as I'm concerned. It completely changed the effect of the opening sequence especially. That opening scene I feel is one of the great movie openings of all time. I actually bought the Region 2 version that had the original dub that Streamline Pictures did in 1989. I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen 3 times during it's two week run. I still think it's a better dub than the Disney one. A shame about the DubTitles though, the original Disney release is better for the subbed version. Hard to believe the inconsistent attention to detail in DVD releases. Anyway, still one of the greatest anime titles of all time. Miyazaki is the only writer/director I've come across who hasn't put out a clunker in over 30 years! Starting with his "Conan, Boy of The Future" TV series in 1978. Still mindblowing it's never been released state side, except for Spanish TV many moons ago.Get more detail about Castle in the Sky.

Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Review

The show itself is great, but sadly Funimation gave it one of the worst releases in recent anime history. First of all, like many Funi titles past and present, the episodes are overly compressed and the video suffers as a result. Color banding, digital artifacts, and background noise are quite prevalent and very distracting. I have seen bootleg DVDs that look better than this one. Funimation was starting to get better when they were only doing 4 episodes a disc, but it's become quite obvious with releases like this that they cannot handle the now fairly standard 6 episodes per disc.
Second of all, the dub was just awful. Funimation has put out some bad dubs in recent years, like Kodocha and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, but Ouran takes the cake. Once again, instead of putting though into their casting, they just simply took the route of using the "Hot VA's" of the moment. So we get stuck with Vic Mignogna and Caitlin Glass in roles they truly do not fit. In fact, their performances are so off, it drags the rest of the performances down, which is a shame. Greg Ayres and others in the cast turn in truly great performances, but the laziness of Vic's and Caitlin's performances nearly ruin them.
The show itself should bet 4 stars, but this release is 1 or 2 stars at best. Funimation should really be ashamed of this one. I was really looking forward to this show, but these DVD sets have been a huge disappointment.Get more detail about Ouran High School Host Club: The Complete Series [Blu-ray].

One Piece: Season Two, Third Voyage This instant

As is the case with each and every one of my One Piece reviews, I have to open by confessing a certain unwavering approval-factor of this series right off the bat. For a property with the word "shonen" right there in its title, the show is surprisingly devoid of the usual formulaic clichés that bog down most entries into the genre. Rather than endless fighting in some mystical tournament, One Piece has absolutely mastered the art of giving fighting fans what they want and blending it with a nice adventure-driven plot with unique (and likable) characters to boot. Suffice to say, I was hooked immediately.
That said, Season Two, Third Voyage contains episodes 79-91 of the ongoing saga across two discs. The packaging, as has been the case with all of the Region 1 releases thus far, consists of two thin packs within an attractive cardboard outer slipcase. Runtime comes in at 320 minutes and the show wears an appropriate if not slightly conservative TV 14 rating (due to a steady dose of cartoony violence rather than inappropriate language, nudity, or gore).
Language options are standard sub & dub, which means the viewer has the choice of the original Japanese dialog track (stereo) or an English dub (Dolby Digital 5.1) and the option of running English subtitles with either.
Special features consist of textless songs, Funimation trailers, and marathon play option (turns each disc into one continuous episode), and an English staff commentary over episode 87 (note: this last one is not located in the Special Features section but rather in the episode selection. It is very easy to miss!)
The One Piece Season Two Third Voyage basically picks up where the Second Voyage left off in that the Strawhats remain on a mission to deliver the Princess Vivi to her homeland of Alabasta. However, sheer survival is the more immediate goal of this chunk of episodes with Nami fighting an extremely high fever, which causes the crew to port at the wintry island of Drum in search of medical help.
Pursued by a metal-mouthed pirate king named Wapol and his goons (including the hilarious detachable-afro wielding Kuromarimo), there is no shortage of conflict for the big-hearted crew this time around.
Fans of the show will likely mark this entire portion of the saga as the introduction/ origin story of the "only in Japan" adorable talking reindeer, Chopper. His segment is interesting if not a bit heavy on the dramatic side (prepare for a lot of character-crying).
In all honesty, I cannot say that this has been my absolute paramount section of the overall prose but it is an improvement to the last section (Season Two, Second Voyage) in my opinion anyway. Just like last time I suppose my own disappointment comes from the fact that there isn't a whole lot of oceanic pirating to report nor are our infamous crew's special powers utilized to quite the degree of awesomeness that fans have grown to expect. Then again considering the incredible length of the show, I guess island side tangents are to be expected.
Of course this isn't to say that there aren't a steady stream of near-invincible baddies to dispatch, damsels in distress to rescue, or blissful ignorance displayed by the good captain, Monkey D. Luffy, the story just seems to jaunt off on several sidetracks along the way.
Hopefully by now fans have come to expect the fact that the show will end on a cliffhanger (which may or may not be considered a good thing to those of us forced to wait patiently for the next installment to arrive!)
Fans of the show will continue to enjoy the unique, washed-out visual style that has become One Piece's staple over time. The sound work is spot on in both language options with the English dub working just about as well in every aspect as the original Japanese track (especially the voice of Kuromarimo which is just spot on in the dub).
At times it's almost hard to believe that it has been exactly a decade since this collection debuted on television airwaves. While advances in animation process and technology are undisputable, the charm that made One Piece a gem then is undoubtedly present now.
In all a must-own collection for those of us who have been taking the voyage thus far (even if it isn't the best mini story arc per se'). The special features are quite nice (the English staff commentary track actually contains the harshest language of the whole compilation believe it or not) and the packaging maintains the excellent look and feel of its predecessors. My only complaint comes in the form of the ending of episode 91 as its inconclusive nature has me anxiously awaiting the next One Piece release. You would think I would be used to this pattern by now...Get more detail about One Piece: Season Two, Third Voyage.

Trinity Blood Box Set (Viridian Collection) Immediately

This was a VERY disappointing series. The animation itself is fantastic and very well done. The costuming is excellent and the realism of body movement and facial expressions. The storyline however is very lacking. This series lacks a cohesive consistancy and a depth other great animes (like Helsing) have. If you have seen vampire animes like Helsing and loved them you will not like this series and I would not waste time or money on it. If you are just starting to get into anime, don't quite know your genre, your style, what you like, this could be a good starting series for you.
On a personal note I found some aspects to be very interesting (SPOILER) like the fairy vampires which inhabit the island populated only by children. Other things like (SPOILER) the blah blah blah... "40% activate!" and blah blah blah "activate!" all the time to be annoying. I think the transformations of some of the characters morphing could have been done in a MUCH better way. The accuracy of facts in real life (aka the Vatican) was totally absent and was something I did find a little bit difficult to get past as it got a little confusing for me but I think that this is something more so due to a cultural difference; being more attribited to the way the Japanese see or even understand the Vatican perhaps.
All in all I was disappointed and there are much better anime series out there in the same genre which have more to offer. But, the animation was A+, other than that totally a stinker =(Get more detail about Trinity Blood Box Set (Viridian Collection).

One Piece: Season Three, First Voyage Buy Now

As many of the other DVD sets for One Piece, Season 3, 1st Voyage holds 13 episodes...or episodes 144-156.
This set pulls away from the filler arcs of the final voyage of Season 2, and jumps back into the manga based arcs with the Jaya arc and the start of the Skypiea arc.
The Jaya arc (ep. 144-152) is a pretty interesting arc in my personal opinion. Nami is confused because the log pose (for those of you that don't know much about the series a log pose is a sort of compass that points to the next island you need to go to by using magnetic fields) is pointing towards the sky. Not long afterwards, a gigantic ship falls from the sky and sinks in the ocean. Luffy and others gear up to go underwater to see what sort of secrets the ship has and find a 200 year old map to an island called "Skypiea". In the midst of this, a salvage crew led by Captain Masira, are also trying to get what's in this ship that just crashed. Eventually one thing leads to another and Masira and crew are beat down and the Strawhats continue forward until they find an island named Jaya and dock at a town appropriately named Mock Town. This town is filled with pirates fighting one another at almost every turn. Eventually Luffy & Zoro run into an up and coming pirate named Bellamy who ridicules them for their high aspirations and furthermore when asked of the possibility of an island in the sky. There's a small altercation and Luffy and Zoro are left beat up a bit, but still in good shape (they don't fight back). Not long afterwards they run into a pirate named Blackbeard, who seems like a very likeable character. He urges Luffy to continue to pursue his dreams and that he'll definitely find Sky Island. Eventually the Strawhats run into a man named Montblanc Cricket whom is ridiculed across Jaya Island because he had an ancestor who told stories of an entire city made of gold but the city was never found and he was labeled a liar. Over the years the story of his ancestor grew so famous there were children's books written about the man who eventually achieved the name 'Liar Norland'. Cricket believes Norland may have been telling the truth and as proof he has some gold artifacts from his daily underwater excavating in search for gold that could have been left behind from the ancient city his ancestor spoke of. The Strawhats ask for help finding Sky Island, and the old man recommends they find a Southbird (bird that always faces South), and use it to find the Knockup Stream in the ocean that could possibly blast them up to the island. While they are looking for the Southbird, Bellamy and crew find their way to Montblanc's house and rob him of his gold artifacts that he'd worked so hard for. When the Strawhats return to find Montblanc beat up and his gold missing, Luffy finds enough reason to give Bellamy the beat down he deserves and does so thoroughly. Not long after this the scene changes to marine HQ where they are trying to decide who will take Crocodile's place as a Warlord. At that moment, Blackbeard's own crewmate shows up and nominates his Captain to become a Warlord of the Sea. At the end of this arc, the Strawhats finally leave Jaya to get on the Knockup Stream and find Sky Island.
The Skypiea arc (ep. 153-156) is the next big arc of the series after the Alabasta arc, but this DVD set just starts to crack into it. The Strawhats ride the Knockup Stream to the very top and eventually land on clouds thick enough to hold the Going Merry above it. Not long afterwards, the Strawhat crew find their way to Skypiea, a town in the sky, which is a beautiful place, but deep down has very troublesome dangers that not only awaits the Strawhat crew, but the entire population of Skypiea itself. This DVD set ends with the Strawhats becoming criminals in Skypiea for not paying the admittance fee when first entering Skypiea and it eventually turns out worse when they attack the White Berets (name given to Skypiea's police squad).
This DVD set is simply awesome, the introduction of Blackbeard plays a major role later in the series. Cheers to the start of a new season, 5 stars...it's definitely worth a buy because it sets the tone for so many things that will happen in Season 3 and future DVDs of this series, but I would not pay the Amazon price that is currently listed at almost $50.00. Look around and you'll see most One Piece DVDs going for $25-$35, if you read my last review of the voyage before this one that's the price range I recommended buying that one for, and the same applies here, find it cheaper and definitely buy it especially if you're a fan of the series and even if you're not one but just a casual anime fan this is one of the best series you'll come across.

Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 7 Decide Now

Naruto Uncut Box Set 7 is a three DVD disc set that contains episodes seventy-nine through ninety-two of Naruto. The first disc contains four episodes, the second disc contains five episodes, and the third disc contains five episodes and the special features. The focus of this box set is on the death of the Third Hokage, the battle between Sasuke and Itachi, and Jiraiya and Naruto's search for Tsunade.
The first extra is labeled as "Production Art." This consists of ten pages, which are model sketches of some of the Naruto characters. There is a sneak preview of Naruto Uncut Box Set 8, which runs for roughly four minutes. Next is "From Sketch to Screen," which contains eight pages of storyboards from episode eighty-five. For each storyboard, you can choose to see the clip that the storyboard is for. You can also see the English credits in the "Extras" menu.
A link in the extras menu labeled as "Trailers" takes you to four trailers. The first is a trailer for the Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution videogame. However, this trailer feels more like a "how to" tutorial for playing the game instead of an actual advertisement; also, the audio is mastered very low on this clip, so it's really hard to hear it unless you turn the volume way up. There are also trailers for Bleach, The Prince of Tennis, and Death Note included.
Next in the extras menu is a selection labeled as "Manga." This link takes you to advertisements for Shonen Jump Magazine, an advertisement for the Naruto manga, and a couple of advertisements for other Shonen Jump manga titles. The final selection in the menu is labeled as "Sneak Peek"; it turns out that this selection takes you to a trailer promoting Viz Media's release of the Buso Renkin anime series.
I'm still rather disappointed in the lack of special features on this set, even though I've come to expect it. However, if you're a Naruto fan that wants to collect all of the episodes on DVD, then the Naruto Uncut Box Set 7 would be a good addition to your DVD library.
In order to write this review, I checked out a copy of this DVD box set through the King County Library System.Get more detail about Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 7.

This is a great set just like all of Naruto's box sets. Don't listen to any one when they say this is a bad set. I have all of the sets and they are all great. They are well worth the money.Get more detail about Naruto Uncut Box Set 11.
Lowest Price Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Two

Bickering back and forth about what version is better. Everyone needs to understand that it's a matter of opinion and preference. My opinion is that the English Dub is superior over the original. At no point in this series is there a message so profound that not translating the original dialog word for word ruins the shows "message". Personal opinion is that Japanese voice acting just doesn't fit the characters. Now my opinion is based on a western view because "Shocking" im from the west. I fully understand that its the style of the original series and I can respect where the JAP fans are coming from.
But let's be honest here, they are milking this for what they can. There not giving the fans what they want they are giving a product to the percent of fans that the original product didn't cater to. I own the orange bricks. Aside from the cropping of hair which honestly isn't that big of a deal I really enjoy the set. Bottom line is that this product is really for those that held out for it. To go back and forth and say this version is better than the other version is asinine. Apparently this version has better video quality but doesn't have English music. Well it seems like its a give and take. So it really just comes down to how you enjoy the show the most. I put money that there will be a new box that claims its the best. We still have an entire new format that needs to be hit. I seriously doubt they are going to stop at Kai.
The JAP DBZ elitist need to give it a rest. Just because you prefer the original doesn't make it the best. The "this is how the creators wanted it to be seen" is really a crock of S***. There have been several remakes of shows, movie ect, that have been better than the original product. The same goes for the American fans. This box set is really not meant for you. It's unfortunate that this set has a better picture quality but is it worth losing the eng music ? Is it worth paying for a set you already own ? Personal opinion is that its not. If this is what you held out for then your in luck but unless your just an obsessed collector dont double dip if your happy with your set.
And for F*** sake stop arguing about which version is better. In a year there will be a different set that claims to better. Honestly, when they release the complete re-mastered on Blue-ray/DVD with every option for every type of fan then it will truly be a superior product .
