Discount Soul Eater: Part 3

First we got Medusa, then Asura the kishin. And in "Soul Eater: Part 3," we get a new magical supervillain -- along with a slew of elaborate battle, magical items, insanity, and some disturbing hints about Death's past. It's a little disconcerting when we get episodes that don't really deal with the plot arcs (EXCALIBURRRRRRR!), especially since those arcs are getting so intense, convoluted and dark.

The battle against the golem goes horribly awry when it's revealed what's inside it -- the soul of the evil witch Arachne, the sister of Medusa and the creator of the weapon-people. And she wastes no time in reactivating her old organization, Arachnophobia, and gathering magic tools that are vital to her plans of spreading insanity. To make matters worse, Medusa has somehow survived, possessed the body of a child, and is now forcing Crona to do her bidding -- such as.

And when Death the Kid tries to intercept a magical train in the Sahara, he ends up discovering a possible connection between Lord Death and someone named Eibon. Knowing his father won't just spill the beans, he begins his own covert investigation into what's really going on.

And both the DWMA and Arachnophobia are after the Brew,, a powerful magical tool that's locked in a strange magical field in Alaska. After the increasingly unstable Stein collapses, Maka, Soul, Black Star, Tsubaki, Death the Kid and the twins venture inside. But their fight with Arachne's most deadly servant won't be an easy one even if they can achieve a resonance link -- and they don't know of the malevolent schemes that are being spun outside.

Most of "Soul Eater Part 3" is spent building up the danger from the the quietly manipulative Arachne, and her small army of Arachnophobics (okay, it sounds silly, but you know...). There's also a much grimmer, darker undertone to the stories here, and the silly stuff has been scaled back in places -- although there's still plenty of funny stuff from Death ("Mandolin?" "MANDHELING!").

And while the main plot involves battling Arachne and Co., there are a number of subplots that are painstakingly followed -- Stein's slow descent into insanity, Kid's investigation, Medusa's slow-boiling schemes, and the various Death Scythes returning to the DWMA. These are slowly twined together as the writers start reintroducing some other villains as valid threads (particularly Asura, who's as creepy and crazy as ever), and raise some interesting new questions (WHO IS EIBON? I want to know!).

But the highlight of the season is the battle for the Brew, which takes place both inside and outside a whirling purplish tornado with a jungle temple inside (in Alaska?). While the bloody battles outside are awesome, the true highlight is seeing the team resonate and fight the bloated Mosquito.

The team also has to deal with greater stress in their lives -- Kid's OCD hijinks take a back seat to his investigation into Eibon and his magical tools, and Black Star starts to experience crippling doubts about himself. Poor Crona gets sucked back into his mother's evil influence, and Stein is just losing his mind (as evidenced by his hysterical laughter in Alaska). And Arachne makes a nice short-term villain for this arc -- she's cool, calm, manipulative and so amoral that her own people want her dead.

"Soul Eater Part 3" adds a tangle of centuries-old mysteries and grudges to the mix, leaving you desperately wanting whatever's coming next. Mandolin?Get more detail about Soul Eater: Part 3.

Cheapest Fullmetal Alchemist: The Complete Second Season

This version of full metal alchemist is decent compared too the true version that's based off the manga that is "Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood"
Now if you saw this before on TV or online then you should buy this, but if you have not, wait for the "Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood" Boxsets too come out and watch those too see the official storyline and not this fake one.

Well getting passed my personal preference, I gave this boxset four stars because though its not the real storyline it still tells the story in a good way.
It has great voice acting for the characters as well.
And the price I got it for (around $35) wasn't that bad.
So get this boxset along with the first set as well if you want to see another storyline for fullmetal alchemist even though this one isn't the official storyline.Get more detail about Fullmetal Alchemist: The Complete Second Season.

Cheap Fullmetal Alchemist: Season One Box Set

Buying Strike Witches: The Complete Series

I didn't expect the grandest of story lines but I was was very surprised by the over all quality of the story. In some of these "Cute girls fight evil geometric shapes" animes you can often have a laps of story but this show delivered a story that, in typical anime fashion, was heart warming, action backed, happy, sad and dared to blur the lines of good and evil and reality and fantasy.

I would definitely recommend this set to everyone, but be warned, as is typical in some fan service anime there is some animated nudity, and mild sexual situations but nothing too obscene (there's no sex or anything like that) but all together nothing that is horridly vulgar or overly violent.

And a heads up, season 2 has already been announced, hopeful it will get dubbed and released state side, cross your fingers!Get more detail about Strike Witches: The Complete Series.

Buy Moonphase: The Complete Collection S.A.V.E.

I will agree with most of the other reviewers that this is a very good series. (I will not go into an in-depth review, as other reviewers have already done so.) The only thing that I really disliked about it was the fact that I found the opening credits, music for the opening credits, and the teaser for the following episode especially annoying. I thought they were too childish cutsey and it almost made me not want to finish watching the rest of the series. Fortunately, the quick fix to that was just bumping thru all that to get to the series itself, which, as I stated before, is a very good series. I really did enjoy watching Moon Phase. Hazuki's voice is also a bit irritating and childish, but it suits her. This is not your typical vampire anime and you may not like it because of that, but give it a try. The price is more than fair, you get an entire series for about or less than what you would pay for a new release DVD at Wal Mart (I purchased mine here on Amazon from Amazon for about $20 including tax and shipping).Get more detail about Moonphase: The Complete Collection S.A.V.E..

Purchase Slayers Evolution-R: Season 5

"Slayers Evolution-R" is billed as the fifth season, but it's actually more like the second half of the fourth season -- it wraps up all the dangling plot threads and deals with the whole Taforashia disaster. And unsurprisingly, things get a lot darker in these episodes -- as you'd expect for the Slayerverse, things start lighthearted and goofy (soap opera!), but slowly become apocalyptic and explosive.

Lina and her friends focus their efforts on finding the Hellmaster's Jar, a magical item that transfers souls -- and currently holds the spirit of Rezo the Red Priest. With the assistance of a living suit of armor named Nama, the gang launches off into their latest quest... only to get tangled in a bizarre scheme of Zuuma's. He's sent Ozzel and the Hellmaster's Jar to a wealthy merchant named Radock, and lures Lina and Co. to the same town.

Of course, nothing is that simple: Radock isn't all he appears to be, monsters are attacking, and Xellos is trying to get his hands on the jar. However, getting the jar isn't the end of the Slayers' problems, especially since Pokota is determined to resurrect Rezo so the priest can restore his homeland of Taforashia -- and he trusts Rezo a lot more than the rest of the gang does. What is the Red Priest keeping hidden from them?

"Slayers Evolution R" pretty much does what the second half of every "Slayers" story arc does -- all the various loose plot threads (Ozzel, the jar, Taforashia) are tied up neatly, and Lina ends up getting roped into a potentially apocalyptic struggle that somehow stems from everything else in the plot. All that, and we get some nice nostalgia moments with Rezo and "Nama" (who seems strangely familiar to Amelia and Lina).

There's still plenty of hilarious stuff woven in, especially in the hilarious "soap opera" episode that mocks all the melodramatic stuff ("The shock of the accident's given me amnesia!" "I have amnesia too!"). But things get much darker after the gang encounters Zuuma again, resulting in some gruesome deaths, creepy monsters (hair tentacles!) and a horrific flashback where we see how poor Zelgadis became a chimera.

The biggest flaw is that the Epic Climactic Battle feels like a copy of a previous Epic Climactic Battle from way back in the first season. Seriously, come up with something new!

Lina is still bombastic and a little crazy, but she also seems more intelligent this time around, since she's apparently able to unravel people's nefarious plots. There's also fun episodes for Gourry (dumb and good-hearted) and Amelia (who gets stuck inside Nama), and poor Pokota is driven to desperate measures to save his people. And poor Zelgadis is forced to relive the horrors of his transformation into a chimera -- the scene where he finally confronts Rezo's soul is hauntingly powerful.

"Slayers Evolution R" isn't an independent season -- instead, it finishes up the stories begun in "Slayers Revolution," and winds up being a rollicking, dark-tinged adventure/comedy with a deja-vuey ending.Get more detail about Slayers Evolution-R: Season 5.

Order Murder Princess: The Complete Series

As a whole its an entertaining show, that thankfully does not require too much time invested to watch it.

My biggest complaints are the lack of length, which sadly does not give enough time for character development, and the back stories seem pretty rushed. On the positive side, it was not so long that the staff had to put a slew of filler scenes in to ensure it ran long enough. I would say four to five more episodes would have made this one complete.

The other is the main motive for one of the bad guys. Yes its the most cliche thing here.

(Spoiler warning do not read past this if you want to avoid that.)

The big baddie is the older brother returned after years of absence, who wants to destroy the world in order to end all the suffering. Yeah, the same motive for about 75% of the main villains in anime.

Baring that the rest of the show is superb. The character designs are ranging from decent to excellent. I also did actually enjoy how it turned out at the end even with the exceptionally cliche enemy.Get more detail about Murder Princess: The Complete Series.

Shop For Bleach Uncut Box Set: Season 4, Part 1 - The Bount

Listen, if you love Bleach, you'll like this series. The Bounts are pretty lame enemies in my opinion when you put the up against the likes of the entire Soul Society. But it's still Bleach. You still get the awesome fight music ("If you want to see some action, you've got to be the center of attraction!" hahaha, so lame, but great). You still get the good fight scenes.

Things that bother me about it: Ichigo is a weak, whinny little b***h in these episodes. I know they explain that his spirit energy is less in the real world than in the Soul Society, but seriously, we are talking about a kid who attacked an entire civilization of soul reapers and he can't manage to defeat a few Bounts? Bleh, the explanation didn't wash that feeling of disappointment away.

Really, that's it. If you have made it this far in the series then you understand Bleach, and if you understand Bleach then surely you understand anime in general. Ichigo will train for a fraction of the amount of time that everyone else in the world has to train and come out 10 times stronger! Yes! That's why I like anime. If only real life worked liked that! hahaGet more detail about Bleach Uncut Box Set: Season 4, Part 1 - The Bount.

Halo Legends [Blu-ray] Review

I was very hyped about watching the animated shorts, had seen a few on xbox live and was relatively impressed. then i rented this and was thoroughly dissapointed. i think i only liked 3 stories of the 10? some are really good (the babysitter, probably the best) and some were truly awful (the dbz one is the one that comes to mind) it's a good rental but don't waste your money, doesn't expand the universe very much other than giving the forerunners story. the rest are just mediocre at best. don't waste your money on this product. i'd maybe pay $10 at most. it's just not that good.Get more detail about Halo Legends [Blu-ray].

Dragon Ball: Season 5 Top Quality

After I purchase this set I will have the whole Dragon Ball series from Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. I grew up with Dragon Ball Z and never got to see the Dragon Ball series. I'm 24 now and I still enjoy watching. So far all the Dragon Ball box sets have been great so this one won't let you down. Funimation has been releasing and re-releasing DBZ for 8+ years now. I started out buying the VHS's and then started collecting the single DVD's that came with a box holding case, but never got to finish that collection. Then I starting collecting the orange sets and finally got every episode and soon I will have all the Blue sets too. I can't wait for this set and I will give it all thumbs up and suggest every fan of Goku and his friends to purchase it too.

P.S. The DVD's that came out with 3-4 episodes on them may have been expensive to collect, but I thought they were amazing. I have the Cell saga from the beginning to the saiyaman saga on those DVD's. The menus were great, but I guess they went basic to save money and put more episodes per disc (Blue ray releases are inevitable). It's OK though, as long as I have the episodes I'm good. Just wanted to throw that thought in there.Get more detail about Dragon Ball: Season 5.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Season Four Set This instant

This is a review of the entire Yu Yu Hakusho series in general.

Yu Yu Hakusho is not only one of the most action-packed, bloody and intrigueing anime out there but its also the second *funniest* anime i'v ever seen - dwarfed ONLY by the great Desert Punk. Yusuke's script is packed to the brim with wit and sarcastic jokes, in addition to some wonderful belly-laughs from Koenma, Ogre, Genkai and Koto (the Dark Tournament announcer).

There were times where intrigue buildup and just the sheer fun of it all made watching YYH so addictive that 8 entire episodes on a single disc seemed like only 20 minutes went by. The stories behind the Black Black Club, Sensui's personalities, Hiei/Kurama's previous lives in Demon World, and the 3 Demon rulers are awesome and easy to get sucked into. On top of that, the creepy-ass Elder Togoro has become one of my favorite villians ever for his bizarre ability, evil laugh, and the "WTF!?" moments he brings about later in the series.

The only thing wrong with YYH is that the overall story is unorigional. Teenagers with superpowers fight demons blah blah blah immortality isn't all its cracked up to be blah blah blah villian turns against humans because of how bad they can be blah blah blah blah.

Despite the cliche storyline, I simply MUST award all 5 stars... its just too damn funny, gory and intriguing for me to give any rating lower. F.Y.I. its pretty difficult for me to heavily praise a show without a story that impresses me, so this is saying ALOT.Get more detail about Yu Yu Hakusho: Season Four Set.

Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Three Immediately

This is another great set in FUNimation's American Dragon Box line. There really isn't much more to say about this one that hasn't already been said about the previous two sets. As a 20-year-old, hand-drawn anime, this is as good as Dragon Ball Z is ever going to look on DVD. The packaging is deluxe and pristine, and it's clear that FUNimation took great care in preserving the presentation of the more-valuable-than-gold Japanese Dragon Boxes. As someone who has been waiting years for FUNi to treat this series with some respect, I couldn't be happier to finally have a set like this-- to say nothing of eventually owning the entire series like this.

My only complaint is with some of the episodes themselves. While there are several gems on here, in my opinion, this is the weakest compilation of episodes so far. Between the overly-long and repetitive Goku VS Freeza battle, the underwhelming and laborious Garlic Jr. saga, and the fact that this set ends right when the Android saga kicks into gear (specifically, right after Yamucha gets impaled by #20), it does leave you wanting more when it's over. However, it was great to finally get to revisit several parts of the show that I hadn't seen in years.

Minor content issues aside, I still wholly recommend this set, along with the two others. FUNimation has finally gotten it right, and I urge every DBZ fan to support this Dragon Box line to ensure that they continue all the way through Dragon Box Seven.Get more detail about Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Three.

Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (Two-Disc Special Edition) Best Quality

The first one was visually stunning when you remember when it came out, and this director's cut, a) explains the plot holes, and b) wraps up a lot of the COMPLETE Final Fantasy 7 story much better. You get more the characters you love, well most of them, and then you get a summary of what's happened in the prequels, which again, helps to explain the story better.Get more detail about Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children (Two-Disc Special Edition).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Part 1 Right now

Are there any newcomers to FMA anymore? If so, they're in for a treat.
Although in many respects I prefer the original Bones production of the series (2003) and admire its remarkable emotional depth, wonderful score, and stellar voice-acting, I must also give credit to this revamped version, which is almost entirely loyal to Hiromu Arakawa's manga.
It isn't quite as evocative as the first anime, but the story is truly more developed and mesmerizing here - the other anime started too early and the author hadn't quite written enough for an entire series. Brotherhood, nearly a decade later, has a lot more plot to work with and continues to follow Arakawa's remarkable story adeptly throughout.
Why they chose to start the series with a filler episode is beyond me, but all the same, it does justice to the characters and the new animators.
A warning, however - the animation is a bit jarring and often feels too playful for the seriousness of the content. Give it time. The bombastic approach is somewhat lessened as the series carries on.
The dub is highly recommended; Vic Mignona is irreplaceable as Ed and gives Romi Paku, the Japanese actress who portrays him, a run for her money.
Next month, both Brotherhood and the FMA manga are officially ending. For fans of the anime genre, this is a milestone.
It's well worth the effort. Enjoy it while it's hot.Get more detail about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Part 1.

Low Price The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I love this movie. It is one of my favorite animes, despite not having the same elements that I loved so much in movies such as Howl's Moving Castle. However it does have the "lessons learned" theme that is put in a way that doesn't bore you or make you roll your eyes.

Spectacular animation, beautifully made, wonderful music, and great concepts.
This is one of the first times I have seen a movie and am eagerly jumping to buy/loan the book!

I do feel it leaves you with some questions here and there, but it all seems to fit in line with the story, the themes and tones and such, and gives it a "mysterious" or "sci-fi" feel.

I was genuinely surprised with the ending and enjoyed it thoroughly.
This movie made me laugh quite a few times and get pretty sad at one point. It has it's light and serious points and is a fun idea of real life meeting fantasy (time travel technology and people from the future).

Unlike movies such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, or the non-anime Coraline, this movie is not filled with things that will catch a younger child's attention.
However, if you're looking for an interesing film to watch with friends or whoever, it's a good one to watch, enjoy, and talk about.Get more detail about The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Save Soul Eater: Part 1

solid animation and action, blended with a solid sense of humor. A great find for any anime or animation lover.Get more detail about Soul Eater: Part 1.

Discount Grave of the Fireflies

The movie is sad, gets sadder, and when you're waiting for your happy or at least neutral ending, it shatters all hope and breaks your heart.

This movie is one you won't soon forget. It is one that must be watched by anyone who is interested or cares about Japan, history, life, family. It is a very serious movie with few if any light hearted parts. You may find yourself actually crying, even if you're not "that type."

I must warn: this isn't exactly a "children's film" as it shows violence, dead bodies, bombings, starvation, stealing, people hurt, and people dying. I wouldn't say it's gory, controversial, but rather very real and well-thought out in this film. However... It is NOT your typical anime.

This movie deals with the struggle of families trying to survive war and finding a way to deal with loss - of family, of food, of shelter, the struggle to survive and eat and stay well with little to no money or support.

I am glad I watched this film, its worth your time, your money, and the way it makes you think and grips your heart. If you're looking for happy endings, whimsy, "fantasy" in its usual anime sense, made-up creatures, humor, or a fun family film, this isn't it. But if you take it for what it is and what it is meant to express and be, I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Cheapest Porco Rosso

While this film of course has its share of silly, slapstick comedy a child may enjoy; the theme itself has a 1950s Bogart quality to it. You can throw in this movie and Casablanca and see where I'm going at. I enjoyed the movie not just as a beautifully animated feature, but a wonderful story that could be retold as an Oscar-worthy live action feature film. Cheap Dragon Ball Z Kai: Season One, Part One [Blu-ray]

In my own opinion, I think this is redicules. Re-editing/recreating the Dragonball Z series is just down grading the popularity. No one is going to buy it. I grew up watching Drangball and Dragonball Z, and they were great at there peek, but not anymore. By recreating a previous sereis is jusy making it worse. Funimation needs to just leave it be.

Purchase Pokemon the First Movie - Mewtwo vs. Mew

This movie is AWESOME!!!

I love this movie, because I love Pokemon.

Pokemon is no longer just for kids, Pokemon can still be fun for kids, but Pokemon can be fun for some older people too.

I loved Pokemon since when I was little kid, and I still Pokemon.
I got the DVD of this Pokemon movie for a birthday present when I was a teenager, and I still have the DVD of Pokemon the First Movie.

I recommend this movie to folks that love Pokemon.

Here are some reasons why I love this movie:
- This movie is based on this cartoon series Pokemon.
(This movie was made after they aired the original series of Pokemon)
- Ash's voice sounded great in this in Pokemon the First Movie as in the original series of Pokemon
- Misty was still traveling with Ash, when this Pokemon movie was made.

I would also recommend this Pokemon movie to some folks that say Misty is good-looking.
Remember Misty has a crush on Ash.
I miss seeing Misty in Pokemon.
Ash and Misty had great adventures together. Ash and Misty are a great couple.

If you love Pokemon, buy this Pokemon movie on DVD.
If you love Pokemon and If you don't have a copy of this movie, buy it if you want it!!!

Order Ghost in the Shell: Anime Legends 2nd Gig

When I first purchased these discs over two years ago I paid $20 per disc (x7 discs...) I want to give Bandai a great big hug for this set. I love this series and hope as many intelligent people as possible see it.

I won't bore anyone with the details of the plot, story, etc...

Suffice to say, this is a vast improvement over the first series (SAC). The main antagonist is one of the great characters of anime history (Kuze). He is neither villain nor hero, but something necessary and in between and the animators and voice actors really bring this out.

The stand alone episodes are rich and entertaining and go to show a lot of each character's history. The pace is steady and quick without being too fast. Togusa (my favorite character) really moves into the forefront as one of the three most important characters.

The animation quality is strong and never wavers for a second (like other series who outsource to Korea). The voice acting is strong in both Japanese and English. I watch 95% of my anime in Japanese, but I really prefer this series in English for some odd reason!

If you like trippy, mind bending sci fi in the same vein as Blade Runner, Gattaca, and Logan's Run; then you MUST watch this series (and the 2 movies!)Get more detail about Ghost in the Shell: Anime Legends 2nd Gig.

Shop For Pumpkin Scissors: The Complete Series Box Set S.A.V.E.

This retrofuture military anime (an alternate Europe post-WWI 1920s) begins well with a Kaname Chidori-like strong female character commanding a group of military misfits in some interesting missions. They then stumble onto Hilary Clinton's "vast right-wing conspiracy" and the plot takes some FULL METAL ALCHEMIST type plot turns. By episode 18 it looks like this will really be a good anime. Then (apparently) the director decided not to complete the story and wait for a second season. The plot just stops and disc 4 contains 6 episodes of the longest, most drawn out, most boring "boss battles" (with a very minor boss) in living memory. What a waste!Get more detail about Pumpkin Scissors: The Complete Series Box Set S.A.V.E..

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 [Blu-ray] Review

I am reviewing the DVD release, so I won't comment on Blu-Ray picture quality. As noted by others, the changes to the original film are not earth-shattering, and they aren't all improvements.

New computer generated 3D animation is substituted for some of the old cell animation. But the transitions are jarring. The change is hard to justify. The old animation was good, and the style was more or less consistent.

I personally think the English dubbing should have been re-done. Just something about the Major's voice has always been a little too deadpan. But basically the same old voice tracks are used.

The color of the whole film is shifted toward sepia. Everything is more washed-out and more brown than before. It doesn't look good to me.

I bought the 12" laserdisc of GITS when it came out. The first DVD release of GITS was quite good. Maybe you will prefer 2.0, but for me it is change for change's sake. The film is worth multiple viewings, but I'll stick with 1.0, thank you.Get more detail about Ghost in the Shell 2.0 [Blu-ray].

Dragon Ball Z: Season Five (Perfect and Imperfect Cell Sagas) Top Quality

The Dragon Ball Z Season Five DVD box set includes six DVDs that contain twenty-six episodes. The first two discs contain six episodes, the third disc contains five episodes, the fourth and fifth discs contain three episodes, and the sixth disc contains three episodes and the DVD extras.

The special features really aren't all that special. All you get are the textless versions of the opening and ending credits (which is a feature that was already included on the previous four DVD box sets), and trailers. The trailers included on this set are for xxxHolic, Glass Fleet, Black Cat, Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Baki the Grappler, and Samurai 7.

Another issue I have with this set is with the audio mastering levels. FUNimation's opening splash screen, the trailers at the beginning of the DVDs, and the menu were mastered at a high audio level. However, the actual episodes on the discs were mastered with a very soft audio level. It's rather frustrating to have to sharply turn the volume down when you put the DVD into the player, and then having to sharply turn the audio back up in order to hear the audio for the episodes.

While I was disappointed with the audio levels and the lack of special features, this set is still a "must get" for any Dragon Ball Z fan that wants all the episodes on DVD. This 26-episode set sells for anywhere between $30 and $50. The price is a little disappointing for this set, since you paid the same price for the previous four sets but you get more episodes on the previous volumes.

In order to write this review, I checked out a copy of this DVD box set through the King County Library System.Get more detail about Dragon Ball Z: Season Five (Perfect and Imperfect Cell Sagas).

Bleach Uncut Season 3 Box Set: The Rescue This instant

Bleach, "The Rescue" has been the best season f the series yet. You see Ichigo growth in developing his power and skill as a Soul Reaper. What was disapointing was that they did not show how Ichigo was able to reach "Bankai".
The scene in which Ichigo takes out four squad lieutenants bare-handle was great. The real surprise is the identity of the "traitor" in the Soul Society to learn that a character with whom I thought was a noble person
is an accomplice to the conspiracy. All in all "The Rescue" did not bog down like spots during Season 2.
Great series all in all.Get more detail about Bleach Uncut Season 3 Box Set: The Rescue.

When They Cry: Complete Box Set (Viridian Collection) Immediately

When I finished watching When They Cry, I immediately started watching it again from the beginning. I can't recall the last time I did that - possibly never. But I was so fascinated and enthralled by the show that I had to see it again, to try to get a handle on the strange, elliptical story.

As you may have gathered from other reviews, this series is about a group of children in a small rural town. One or more of them becomes so desperate and/or insane that in the end people get killed. Then the story is "reset", and goes off in a different direction. These different arcs also have other subtle differences. The connections between the arcs, the similarities and differences, and the slowly building suspense as people's lives are endangered, all these factors make for a really fascinating show that has justly been widely praised.

However, on second viewing, when the suspense isn't as great because you know what to expect, the show's flaws become clearer. The pace of the story telling is extremely slow, and the characters make long speeches to each other about things we already know from the previous arcs. You really wish they would tighten the story up and get to the good bits. But, paradoxically, the factors that make second viewing dull are the same factors that make first viewing so suspenseful. I would have settled for less immediate suspense and more rewatch value, but that's just the way I am.

The first two arcs have been made into live-action movies in Japan, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story is handled in these films. Hopefully the whole When They Cry story will eventually be treated this way - it could be a kind of anti-Harry Potter!

Unwary viewers must be warned, this show gets EXTREMELY violent, much more than the supposedly ultraviolent Elfen Lied. The ultra-disturbing quality is actually part of the entertainment value, as in "This is so, so horrible that I just have to laugh," but obviously this kind of thing is NOT for everyone.

(By the way, my top choice for moe horror would probably be the complex, atmospheric Boogiepop Phantom, worth checking out if you haven't already.)Get more detail about When They Cry: Complete Box Set (Viridian Collection).

Dragon Ball Z: Season Four (Garlic Jr., Trunks, and Android Sagas) Buy Now

Dragon Ball Z Season 4, most of this set is really more of the same. Presented in wide-screen format, the screen crops off some of the top and bottom picture, while revealing more of the sides. It fits perfectly on a widescreen television, and even looks decent on a standard television. The film transfer itself is very good. The original framerate has been restored so the animation looks a lot more fluid. The difference is definitely noticeable. The colors have been restored and while the grain has been cut back considerably, it still isn't perfect.

The biggest flaws in all these sets are the vulnerability of the packaging. It isn't too uncommon for discs to get scratched or for the box to come apart and the damages done are sometime irrevocable. When releasing a series as popular as this, Funimation really should've been smarter with the packaging. As usual there are no extras to speak of, some textless songs and trailers.

Storywise season 4 is a transitional stage. It starts with the filler saga about the return of Garlic Jr. an immortal villain from the first DBZ movie. It's actually a pretty good saga that has some nice fight scenes and overall does a good job at filling in the space until the next major event. It's the first step in showing how Gohan inevitably has to step up to take his father's place as leader of the Z-Fighters.

After that is about two episodes that encompass the `Trunks Saga'. Rather short for a self-titled story arc no? Anyways Freiza survived his fight with Goku and comes to Earth rebuilt as a cyborg along with his father King Kold. The Z-Fighters panic to assemble a team to resist the icy tyrant but they are beaten to the punch by a mysterious teenage Super Saiyan. I can't say I like the way Frieza and his father are beaten so easily by this young new character. They should've put up a better fight, but alas. The new character dispatches the alien invaders and invites the other Z-fighters to accompany him to meet Goku upon his landing planet side.

After the main character finally returns, Goku and the new Super Saiyan have a one-on-one conversation. We learn that the young boy is a fighter from the future named Trunks, the son of Bulma and Vegeta. He travels to the past because in his time the world is destroyed by the Androids, artificial beings created by the maniacal Dr. Gero. With this startling revelation Trunks gives Goku some medicine to make sure he doesn't die of a radical new heart virus that will strike him before the Androids arrive, so that Goku can help in the battle. The Z-fighters each begin their own special training to prepare for the appearance of the androids.

Three filler episodes are all that separates the Trunks Saga from the beginning of the Android Saga. Three years pass and the Z-Fighters assemble to battle the androids. Goku's heart virus takes him out of the action early, and Vegeta arrives just in time to save him. Revealing that he has finally become a Super Saiyan as well, Vegeta makes short work of the first android. After a lengthy and `suspenseful' chase scene, the second android is cornered and defeated rather soundly by Piccolo. However Trunks arrives and announces that the androids they are fighting aren't the same as the androids from his time. Bulma adds to the revelations by announcing the android who escaped Piccolo is actually Dr. Gero. Another race sequence begins as the Z-Fighters search out Gero's lab, while the evil doctor himself does the same.

Inevitably Gero activates his other two androids, but 17 and 18 quickly turn against and kill the doctor. They proceed to activate another android that even Trunks did not know about, 16. Vegeta proceeds to challenge the androids himself and has a spectacular fight with 18 but in the end the Saiyan Prince falls, along with all the other Z-Fighters. Only Krillin stays out of the fight, but surprisingly the Androids don't kill any of them. Instead they continue with their primary mission of assassinating Goku, who's still recovering from his heart virus.

Before the Z-Fighters can figure out what to do about androids 17 and 18, another menace arises. That struggle will begin in the next season.

Save Soul Eater: Part 2

Up till now, "Soul Eater" has been a fairly lighthearted anime with some dark spots.... but that completely changes with "Soul Eater: Part 2." The first few episodes are pretty goofy, but it doesn't take long for the story to spiral into a dark, bloody blend of horror and supernatural action, as Medusa's secret plan goes into effect -- and the entire DMWA ends up facing their worst nightmare.

Things are going as usual for the meisters and weapons -- a challenging written test (only a few students actually manage to write anything), a visit to Excalibur, and Death the Kid's mission to a ghost ship that is attacking ships in the Baltic sea. But things take a dark turn on the anniversary party for DWMA's founding: Sid's mission to infiltrate Medusa's hideout goes horribly awry, the werewolf Free seals everybody inside a single tower in the school, and Medusa puts her master plan into action...

The only ones who escape the barrier are Stein, Maka, Soul Eater, Death the Kid, Liz and Patty, Black Star and Tsubaki -- and with everyone else trapped for the next hour, it falls to them to stop Medusa and her followers. It turns out that they're planning to free the most horrifying kishin of all, a creature so monstrous that Death sealed him under Death City. Maka and her friends must fight past Medusa, Crona and Free to block them from raising the malevolent Asura -- but even if they make it in time, they may not be able to stop it.

If the first part of "Soul Eater" was mostly lighthearted with some dark spots, then "Soul Eater: Part 2" is mostly dark with some lighthearted spots -- and what's more, meister missions to collect evil souls are pushed to the wayside. Instead, the focus shifts to Medusa's invasion of the DMWA and the frantic race against time to stop Asura from rising again... with the required string of one-on-one fights.

Sure, there's a few funny moments -- the test episode is pure hilarity, especially when Death the Kid spends the allotted time trying to write his name. But the overall feeling is one of horror, with plenty of grotesque creatures (Asura is freaky before we even see him!), bloody fights, nightmarish hallucinations (the teeth! THE TEETH!), and bizarre plot twists. And all the fights are pretty good and wonderfully imaginative, especially the nerve-tearing duel between Medusa and Stein, and the unveiling of Death the Kid's twin bazookas... brilliant.

The only major flaw is that the fiery magical duel between Death and his old enemy is awesome... but too short. Even one episode of them duking it out with scarves and spiky death-curses would have been good!

Maka and Soul have some new problems to deal with -- not only is Soul still being tempted by madness, but a Soul Resonance temporarily turns Maka into a raving grinning psychopath. But you know they'll come out all right, merely by trusting in each other; additionally, Maka finally manages to reach the weirdly bendy, androgynous Crona, who turns out to be even more scarred than we thought. And there's a brief, uncomfortable scene where we see inside the twisted mind of Stein... which promises to get even more twisted after this.

Things get dark'n'nasty in "Soul Eater: Part 2," and they don't show signs of improving anytime soon. Fortunately, the handling of the fights and horrific stuff is nothing short of brilliant.Get more detail about Soul Eater: Part 2.

Purchase Dragon Ball GT: Season One

Many people to my surprise hate GT(I personally love DBZ and Dragonball was awesome too. I personally love the series I felt like Pan, Goku, and Trunks searching for the dragonballs at the beginning of this series was a very nice nostalgic element to the series, getting ot see Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, Bulma, Gohan and the rest of the gang in their much older forms is pretty cool, especially if you've been following the series since you were a child, most fans grew up on the series, but newcomers can still enjoy this series (If you like GT, you'll love Dragonball and DBZ). This box set covers the Black Star and Baby sagas(though a few episodes of the Baby saga end up being on season 2). The Season one box set includes a booklet that gives you a brief summary on characters and episode descriptions, which is a very good tool for those who are new to the series or who want to come back later to watch their favorite episodes. The marathon feature is great for quicker viewing, they've got textless songs, andanese audio for those who want to see the series in its original form. The DVD includes 34 episodes on 5 discs, and although the first 15-16 episodes are entertaining, there's not as much fighting as hardcore DBZ fans are used to, but it quickly picks up as the Baby saga gets underway and continues onward from there. If you're a fan of the series, I recommend adding GT to your collection, and at the reasonable price 0f around $18, it's worrh it.Get more detail about Dragon Ball GT: Season One.
